Bloggers get to grips with updated platform

The world's most popular blogging platform, WordPress, has launched a major new version of its software.

The most significant new feature in WordPress 3.0 for professional bloggers is the merger of the multi-user version of the software into the main core, meaning it's now possible to run multiple blogs from a single installation.

To help improve security, WordPress now allows blog administrators to choose their own login name, rather than being forced to use the "admin" default, which meant hackers only needed to breach the password to gain full access to a WordPress site.

There's also a number of new features for more casual or hobbyist bloggers. The dated-looking default theme, Kubrick, has been replaced with the much more contemporary looking Twenty Ten.

Twenty Ten includes new APIs - that will be available to other theme developers - that allow bloggers to create background images, custom menus and shortlinks. There's also a new header option that allows users to insert an image that appears at the top of all blog posts, or create individual headers for each post.

WordPress also claims to have made the software less intimidating for beginners, with a cleaner interface and contextual help menus on every screen that explain the functions in front of the user.

WordPress 3.0 is available for download now; existing users can upgrade via their WordPress dashboard. It's also now the default software for users who run hosted blogs via the WordPress.com site. It is recommended any plug-ins running on previous versions be updated beforehand.
