Movies arrive on iTunes store for Ireland

Lifestyle Tech | 30 Apr 2010 :
Irish users of iTunes are finally catching up on video rental functions following an annoucement from Apple that movies from major film studios are now available on the iTunes Store for rent or purchase. Titles included in the first wave of relases include Avatar, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, Up and The Hangover.

Once a movie is rented, it starts downloading from the iTunes Store directly to iTunes or Apple TV, and users with a fast Internet connection can start viewing the movie in seconds. Customers have up to 30 days to start watching it, and once a movie has been started customers have 48 hours to finish it-or watch it multiple times.

iTunes movies start at €7.99 for catalogue title purchases, €9.99 for recent releases and €13.99 for new releases. iTunes Movie Rentals are €2.99 for library title rentals and €3.99 for new releases, and high definition versions are priced at one euro more.

With high street video libraries charing over €5 for renting new releases, the move is expected to put even more pressure on an industry squeezed by illegal file sharing and lacklustre Blu-ray uptake.
